framed: 72.2 x 94.1 cm.; 28½ x 37 in.

Anthony Morris Storer II, Major Storer (1813–1902), by 1841, Purley Park, Berkshire (his bookplate on the reverse);
Thence by descent to his daughter, Leila Storer (1862–1918), who married George Frederick Downing Fullerton (1857–1916), Purley Park, Berkshire, until at least 1912 (as Breughel and Rubens; the Downing-Fullerton bookplate on the reverse);
In the family collection of the present owners since at least the 1950s, and thence by descent.

The animals depicted here are known motifs used by Jan Brueghel the Elder as well as Jan Breughel the Younger, such as the birds perched on the branches in the Paradise landscape by the latter, in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. 1406).1 The figures are in the style of Willem van Herp (1614–1677), and the landscape is in the style of Izaak van Oosten (1613–1661).
